Stella

Stella couldn’t believe how easy it had been to get Beth Sebring’s neighbor to let her inside the house. Or how easy it was to get the neighbor to leave. Stella typed a text into her phone and pretended to take a call.

“Mrs. Sebring? Yes, dear, I am here. Your neighbor was so kind to let me in. The stove is off. I see... I see... The cat needs his medicine at eight? Well... I could stay a little later. It’s not that big of a deal. I’ll let your neighbor know. Oh, no, don’t apologize, I don’t mind. I want to work with you on this. Sure, take your time.” All the while, she nodded at the neighbor and wandered through the house, petting cats and checking outlets, peeking in doorways. She noticed a large painted box with a gold star sitting on the primary bedroom bed. “I’ll let your neighbor know. Thanks, Mrs. Sebring.”

Sighing loudly, Stella approached Mrs. Sebring’s neighbor. “Well, it appears that she forgot to give the cat his medicine, and she’s staying an extra night with her daughter. I don’t mind giving it to him at eight. You don’t need to leave the key. I can show myself out and lock the knob, I don’t mind,” she ushered the old woman out of the house and locked the door before she could protest. Waiting by the window until the woman finally gave up and went home.

Stella stood in the living room of Beth Sebring’s house and stared at the stacks of books and storage bins. “My God,” she muttered. It wasn’t like the houses she’d seen on TV. The house was clean, it smelled nice. The cats were well cared for. But there were stacks and stacks of books, some of them twenty to thirty high, forming a circular pathway like a weird little book Stonehenge.

Stella made her way back down the hallway to the main bedroom where the black trunk with the gold star sat on the bed. A padlock held it locked, but there was a key lying on top of a letter on the bed. Stella picked up the letter.

Dear Indy,

If you’ve found this, then I probably chickened out about going to your place and telling you the truth. In that case, I’m trusting you will turn this box to the FBI. It should cover everything over the past twenty years. I should have spoken up sooner. I didn’t and I am sorry. I’m sorry about Frankie, too, darling. Truly sorry. I wish I could have told you that before.

Love,

Your Mother,

Beth Sebring

“Ok, so that’s weird.” Stella pulled on her gloves, picked up the key, and slid it in the lock. Lifting the lid of the long black box with the gold star painted on it. Underneath the lid was written: For Beth. Love, JB

The reporter knew she was standing in front of a goldmine. And probably evidence, though to what, she wasn’t yet sure. The box was full of unopened bubble mailers and letters.
